October 11, 2023 — An urgent and immediate recall has been initiated for a popular Australian cheese brand, the Unicorn Classic Camembert, due to concerns over potential bacterial contamination that poses a risk of food poisoning. This announcement serves as a stark reminder of the importance of food safety in an era of global supply chains.
In a detailed statement released on Wednesday, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) highlighted its rapid response, mandating the importer, Xie Chun Trading, to recall the 125-gramme cheese product. Of particular concern is the batch set to expire on November 8, which has been pinpointed as potentially tainted.
The recall operation, prioritising consumer safety, is actively ongoing, the agency confirmed, emphasising its commitment to public health.
Singaporean consumers familiar with Ryan’s Grocery, a popular online food marketplace, may recognise the product. Additionally, the brand has a presence through two physical storefronts in the region, further widening its distribution network.
This international alert was triggered after Food Standards Australia New Zealand, a renowned authority on food safety, detected potential dangers earlier this week. Their investigations indicated the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium infamous for causing severe foodborne diseases.
In an effort to raise awareness and provide crucial information, the SFA’s statement extensively discussed the dangers associated with Listeria. The agency specified that certain food items are more susceptible to listeria contamination. This includes products like unpasteurised (raw) dairy, certain soft cheeses, especially those ripened using mould, refrigerated spreads derived from meat, varieties of smoked fish, and several ready-to-eat items commonly found in delis, such as meats and sausages.
Listeria infection, while treatable, can lead to a host of unpleasant symptoms. The SFA elaborated that individuals infected might experience symptoms ranging from fever and muscle aches to nausea and severe diarrhoea. Such conditions, especially if they persist or intensify, warrant medical attention.
For the wellbeing and safety of the public, the SFA is ardently advising all those who might have purchased the Unicorn Classic Camembert to exercise caution and avoid consumption. If anyone has inadvertently consumed the potentially contaminated cheese and feels unwell, they are encouraged to promptly seek medical guidance.
To assist with customer concerns and provide clarity, individuals can reach out to their respective point of purchase. The establishments are equipped to address inquiries related to this recall.
In a globalised world where foods and products criss cross borders, such incidents underscore the importance of rigorous food safety standards. It also highlights the need for swift and decisive action when potential threats emerge. Consumers, meanwhile, are reminded of the value of staying updated and informed about the foods they bring into their homes. Stay tuned to DEI for more updates.
