Singapore Design Week (SDW) is one of Asia’s premier design festivals, showcasing the creativity and innovation that defines Singapore’s unique approach to design. Scheduled to take place from September 26 to October 6, 2024, this year’s festival promises an exciting array of events, exhibitions, and activities centred around the theme “People of Design.” Organised by the DesignSingapore Council, SDW aims to celebrate the everyday visionaries who contribute meaningfully to society through design.
Singapore Design Week serves as a platform for local and international designers to showcase their work and engage with the public. The festival will feature over 80 programmes spread across three key design districts: Bras Basah.Bugis, Marina Bay, and Orchard. This year’s festival is structured around three main pillars:
Each pillar focuses on different aspects of design, encouraging collaboration and innovation within the community.
The theme “People of Design” highlights the contributions of individuals from various backgrounds who are making significant impacts through their work in design. This year’s festival invites participants to explore their own potential in design, fostering a sense of community and shared aspiration for a better future. As Jody Teo, director of SDW 2024, states, “We hope everyone will gain a deeper appreciation for the role of design and be inspired to bring larger design outcomes to the fore.”
This theme resonates deeply with Singapore’s diverse cultural landscape, where designers from different disciplines—be it fashion, architecture, graphic design, or product design—come together to share their stories and experiences. By focusing on people rather than just products, SDW aims to humanise the design process and encourage dialogue about how design can enhance everyday life.
The Design Futures pillar will focus on exploring how design can shape a better future. A highlight will be the Design Futures Forum, which will take place over two days. This forum will include presentations, panel discussions, and interactive sessions led by industry experts. Notable keynote speakers include:
These discussions will delve into critical topics such as emerging technologies, sustainability, and the role of designers in addressing contemporary challenges. The forum aims to inspire attendees to think critically about the future of design and its implications for society.
The Design Marketplace aims to connect lifestyle trends with the Southeast Asian design community. A significant event within this pillar is FIND – Design Fair Asia, which will take place from September 26 to 28 at Marina Bay Sands. This trade fair will feature over 350 design brands and cover more than 17,000 square metres of exhibition space. Attendees can explore a diverse range of products including furniture, lighting, kitchenware, and homeware.
FIND not only serves as a marketplace but also as a networking hub where designers can meet potential collaborators and clients. Workshops and talks will also be held throughout the fair, providing insights into current trends in design and opportunities for professional development.
The third pillar, Design Impact, focuses on how design can influence social change and improve quality of life. This includes various workshops, talks, and exhibitions that encourage participants to engage with design in meaningful ways. The festival aims to inspire attendees to consider how they can use design as a tool for positive change in their communities.
One standout event under this pillar is the Community Design Challenge, where local designers are invited to propose solutions for real-world problems faced by their communities. The challenge encourages innovative thinking while fostering collaboration between designers and community members.
One of the core objectives of Singapore Design Week is to foster community engagement through its various programmes. The festival encourages local designers, firms, and organisations to participate by submitting proposals for community-driven initiatives. These can range from exhibitions and installations to workshops and networking sessions.
By involving a wide range of stakeholders in the planning process, SDW seeks to create an inclusive environment that celebrates diverse perspectives within the design community. This approach not only enhances the festival’s offerings but also ensures that it resonates with a broader audience.
In addition to engaging events for professionals in the field, SDW also places a strong emphasis on education. Various workshops designed for students and aspiring designers will be held throughout the festival period. These workshops cover topics such as sustainable design practises, digital fabrication techniques, and branding strategies.
By providing educational resources and hands-on experiences, Singapore Design Week aims to nurture the next generation of designers who will carry forward the legacy of innovation in Singapore’s vibrant design landscape.
As Singapore continues to establish itself as a UNESCO Creative City of Design, Singapore Design Week stands out as a pivotal event that showcases the city’s commitment to innovation and creativity. The festival not only highlights local talent but also brings together international designers and thought leaders who contribute to a global dialogue on design’s role in society.
With its rich programme spanning over eleven days, Singapore Design Week 2024 promises an inspiring experience for all attendees—whether they are industry professionals or curious members of the public looking to explore the world of design.
Join us from September 26 to October 6 for this celebration of creativity and innovation that aims to inspire everyone involved in or touched by the world of design!
