Singapore has officially embarked on its most ambitious aviation infrastructure project with the groundbreaking of Changi Airport T5 on 14 May 2025. This mega terminal represents a significant milestone in Singapore’s aviation journey, positioning the nation to capitalise on the projected surge in Asia-Pacific air travel demand over the coming decades.

Unprecedented Scale and Capacity Enhancement

Changi Airport T5 will fundamentally transform Singapore’s aviation landscape through its massive scale and capacity. The terminal is designed to handle approximately 50 million passengers annually in its first phase, effectively increasing Changi Airport’s total capacity from the current 90 million to 140 million passengers yearly. This represents a capacity boost of more than 55 per cent, positioning Singapore to handle the anticipated doubling of Asia-Pacific passenger traffic in the 2040s.

The terminal complex spans an impressive 1,080 hectares within the Changi East development, making it nearly equivalent in size to the existing airport. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasised during the groundbreaking ceremony that T5 will be “as big as all our current terminals combined”, underscoring the project’s monumental scope. This expansion is particularly crucial as the Asia-Pacific region is projected to be among the fastest-growing air travel markets over the next two decades.

Innovative Design Philosophy and Architecture

The architectural vision for Changi Airport T5 represents a bold reimagining of airport design, developed by the international consortium of KPF Associates, Heatherwick Studio, and local firm architects. The design concept centres around what architects term an “airport as city” philosophy, where the terminal functions as a vibrant microcity rather than a traditional transit facility.

The terminal’s most distinctive feature is its collection of overlapping curved “roof leaves” with varying heights. These architectural elements serve multiple purposes: breaking down the mega terminal into human-scale spaces, maximising natural light penetration, and creating a sense of comfort and orientation for passengers. Thomas Heatherwick, Design Director at Heatherwick Studio, explained that the design aims to create “a unique place that you’d want to travel to, rather than just travel through”.

Enhanced Connectivity and Transport Integration

For the first time in Changi Airport’s history, T5 will house a comprehensive ground transportation centre that integrates multiple transport modes. This facility will bring together train services, buses, taxis, and other point-to-point transport options, significantly enhancing connectivity to the rest of Singapore. Plans are currently underway to extend both the Thomson-East Coast Line and the Cross Island Line to T5, providing direct connections to the city centre and major transport hubs.

The terminal will also feature an advanced automated people mover (APM) system, similar to the existing Skytrain, which will reduce walking distances throughout the facility. This APM network will not only serve T5 internally but also connect the terminal to Terminal 2, facilitating seamless transfers between terminals. Additionally, T5’s proximity to the Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal opens possibilities for innovative air-to-sea transfer options to neighbouring destinations.

Sustainability and Smart Technology Integration

Changi Airport T5 will set new standards for environmental sustainability in airport design, targeting Green Mark Platinum Super Low Energy certification. The terminal will incorporate smart building management systems featuring AI-optimised air conditioning, intelligent lighting, and hybrid cooling systems. These technologies are designed to significantly reduce the airport’s carbon footprint while maintaining operational efficiency.

Perhaps most notably, T5 will feature one of Singapore’s largest rooftop solar systems, potentially generating enough energy to power approximately 20,000 four-room HDB flats annually. The terminal will also leverage extensive automation for both passenger-facing processes and back-end operations, including baggage handling robots capable of operating in adverse weather conditions.

Economic Impact and Employment Opportunities

The development of Changi Airport T5 represents a substantial economic opportunity for Singapore, with Prime Minister Wong highlighting the project’s potential to create numerous jobs and business opportunities for Singaporeans. The construction phase alone represents a “significant, complex engineering project” that will provide opportunities for local businesses to participate in the development process.

Beyond construction, T5’s operation will generate demand for workers with new skill sets in emerging areas such as data science, robotics, and sustainability. The expanded airport capacity is expected to stimulate growth across various sectors, including logistics, retail, and hospitality, driven by the substantial increase in passenger volumes.

Airline Consolidation and Operational Synergies

One of the most significant operational changes associated with T5’s opening will be the consolidation of Singapore Airlines and Scoot operations under one roof. Currently, SIA Group flights are distributed across Terminals 1, 2, and 3, but this consolidation at T5 will reduce transit and transfer times for passengers while improving operational synergies. This move will also free up space at existing terminals for other carriers to expand their operations.

The consolidation aligns with Changi Airport’s goal of reaching more than 200 city connections by the mid-2030s, up from the current 170 city links. This expansion will further cement Singapore’s position as a leading global aviation hub in the increasingly competitive Asia-Pacific market.

Timeline and Future Readiness

Changi Airport T5 is scheduled to open in the mid-2030s, with construction now officially underway following the May 2025 groundbreaking. The project incorporates lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, featuring flexible design elements that allow the terminal to operate as smaller sub-terminals when needed. This adaptability includes provisions for health testing operations and the segregation of high-risk passengers during future contingencies.

The terminal’s location within the broader Changi East development positions it at the centre of a comprehensive ecosystem that includes the Changi East Industrial Zone for aircraft maintenance and cargo operations, as well as the Changi East Urban District for business and lifestyle activities.

Changi Airport T5 represents more than just an infrastructure expansion; it embodies Singapore’s commitment to maintaining its competitive edge in global aviation while adapting to future challenges and opportunities in the dynamic Asia-Pacific region.
