Walt Disney, the world-renowned entertainment conglomerate, has announced special discounts for children visiting its iconic theme parks. Starting October 24th, tickets for Disneyland Resort theme parks will be available for children at rates as low as US$50 for a day. This move comes amidst observed signs of reduced footfalls in recent times, despite the business rebounding robustly post-the COVID-19-induced slump of 2020 and 2021.
The COVID-19 pandemic, which saw its peak in the years 2020 and 2021, resulted in numerous challenges for various industries worldwide. Amusement parks, largely reliant on footfalls, faced an inevitable slowdown with mandatory closures and attendance restrictions. However, as the world started to recuperate, Disney’s amusement parks not only bounced back but also became the primary profit centre for the media giant. This surge in attendance and profitability helped offset the losses Disney encountered in its Disney+ streaming segment.
Nevertheless, recent observations indicate a potential slackening in visitor numbers. Bob Iger, Disney’s Chief Executive Officer, acknowledged this “softer performance,” particularly at Walt Disney World in Orlando, during an earnings conference call in August. However, Iger remains optimistic, highlighting that the theme park’s performance remains robust and is outpacing its pre-pandemic metrics.
Underscoring the importance of theme parks to its portfolio, Disney unveiled plans last month to substantially increase its investment in this segment. The proposed capital expenditure for its parks is pegged at approximately US$60 billion (S$82 billion) for the upcoming decade, marking a near doubling of its current commitment.
Seeking to lure families back to its magical realms, Disney is introducing these discounted rates for a limited period. Tickets priced at US$50 for Disneyland Resort theme parks will be valid for entry from January 8th to March 10th next year. Additionally, on November 14th, Walt Disney World will roll out an attractive package for families. This package will encompass not only discounted children’s tickets for the theme parks but will also offer special rates on dining plans.
Families have access to these options from March 3 through June 30 of the following year. It’s critical to remember that only children between the ages of three and nine are eligible for these initiatives.
Disney’s proactive approach to luring families to its physical theme parks in an era where virtual experiences are proliferating emphasises the enduring attractiveness of shared physical experiences. It remains to be seen if these attempts will result in a sustained increase in attendance. Stay tuned to DEI for more updates.
