October 10, 2023 — Singapore’s iconic landscapes and cultural nuances will soon receive a zesty animated twist with the world-renowned cat and mouse duo, Tom and Jerry. The much-anticipated series, which places the classic characters amidst the vibrant backdrop of Singapore, is set to premiere on October 21.
The announcement of this unique series came in July, creating a wave of excitement among fans of all ages. The famous chase sequences, punctuated by the pair’s timeless antics, will now occur against the backdrop of Singapore’s famous landmarks, encapsulating the essence of the city-state in every frame.
In a teaser move, Cartoon Network Asia unveiled a special episode on their YouTube channel in August. The episode revolved around the hilarious escapades of Tom and Jerry with Singapore’s beloved fruit, the durian, offering fans a delightful insight into the series’ forthcoming art style and its localised themes.
From October 21 onwards, fans will have a weekly rendezvous with Tom and Jerry every Saturday, with new episodes airing on Cartoon Network and simultaneously on YouTube.
Spanning seven episodes, the series promises a hearty mix of laughter and local culture. It will showcase Tom and Jerry engaging in quintessential Singaporean activities. From savouring the cool delights of ice kachang to roaming the scenic expanse of Sentosa, the series promises to be a vibrant amalgamation of comedic pursuits and local flavours.
Christopher Ho, who leads the Kids’ segment for Warner Bros. Discovery in Southeast Asia, emphasised the series’ authentic Singaporean essence. “Our primary goal was to craft narratives that resonate with the authentic Singaporean experience. We wanted the city’s spirit to shine, all while staying true to the classic animation and humour that have endeared Tom and Jerry to audiences for decades.” Ho shared. He elaborated on the duo’s adventures, highlighting their interactions with local favourites like durian and ice kachang. Moreover, fans can anticipate a special appearance from Merli, a character inspired by Singapore’s mythical Merlion, set against iconic backdrops like the Botanic Gardens, Sentosa, and the shimmering Marina Bay.
Adding to the excitement, Warner Bros. Discovery is extending the animated experience to real-world celebrations. Between November 10 and 26, fans can immerse themselves in the “WB100 Celebrating Every Story” event at Sentosa. This event, which is free for entry, will be a Tom and Jerry paradise. Visitors can marvel at enormous Tom and Jerry inflatables gracing Siloso Beach and even step into the animated world with a 3D photo opportunity, inspired by a specific episode from the series.
Incorporating Singapore’s rich cultural tapestry with the timeless allure of Tom and Jerry, this series is not just a watch; it’s an experience. As the city prepares to welcome its animated guests, fans worldwide are gearing up for a Singaporean adventure like never before. Stay tuned to DEI for more updates.
