Heritage Meets Modernity: Chinatown Celebrated for its Unique Blend of Culture and Contemporary Vibes

October 20, 2023 —Singapore’s iconic Chinatown, celebrated for its harmonious blend of heritage and modernity, has clinched the 14th position on Time Out’s prestigious list of the world’s coolest neighbourhoods. The announcement came on Oct. 17, revealing the top 40 global localities that are buzzing with vibrancy, culture, and flair.

The extensive list was curated based on the opinions of over 12,000 participants. Time Out’s editorial team, along with city experts, sifted through these suggestions to finalise the top 40. The parameters for judgement encompassed community-driven initiatives, access to lush green spaces, and the pulsating rhythm of street life.

Out of the multitude of neighbourhoods in Singapore, Chinatown stood out as the only one to be featured this year. The district found itself nestled between the eclectic Arts District of Los Angeles, ranking 13th, and Fort Greene in New York City, positioned at 15th.

Chinatown’s selection wasn’t just about its location or aesthetic appeal; it was about its essence. Time Out aptly described how the neighbourhood beautifully “encapsulates the multifaceted nature of Singapore.” Lauded as a “culture-rich precinct”, Chinatown is a testament to Singapore’s multicultural ethos. The neighbourhood boasts a myriad of attractions, from revered temples and age-old pastry shops to chic nightlife hubs and coffee houses. Notable mentions that caught Time Out’s attention include the magnificent Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, the bustling Amoy Street Food Centre, and the scenic Pearl’s Hill Terrace.

However, the recognition for Chinatown doesn’t mark Singapore’s inaugural appearance on the list. In the previous year, 2022, Little India, with its sensory explosion of colours, sounds, and aromas, secured the 19th spot. Other distinguished Singaporean districts like Bugis, Katong, and Tanjong Pagar have also received accolades in past years, underscoring the city-state’s consistent appeal on the global stage.

Venturing beyond Singapore, this year’s list shined the spotlight on various iconic locales. These included Sheung Wan in Hong Kong, securing the 5th position, the trendy Tomigaya in Tokyo at 10th, and the vibrant Hannam-dong in Seoul, ranking 25th. The crown, however, was taken by Laureles in Medellín, Colombia, which reigned supreme at the very top of the list.

Time Out’s list acts as a compass for globetrotters, showcasing neighbourhoods that resonate with energy, tradition, innovation, and community spirit. With Chinatown’s recent accolade, visitors to Singapore now have another compelling reason to traverse its intricate lanes, sample its culinary delights, and immerse themselves in its rich tapestry of history and modernity.
