The tale of Alexander Hamilton unfolds with a fusion of hip-hop, jazz, and R&B; tickets available from November.

October 24, 2023 — The buzzing anticipation among the theatre community and Hamilton fans reached a crescendo as the announcement came: the iconic, Tony Award-winning musical, Hamilton, is set to make its debut in Singapore. The curtains will rise on April 19, 2024, at the prestigious Sands Theatre in Marina Bay Sands. Eager fans won’t have to wait long, with tickets slated to go live on November 14 through Marina Bay Sands ticketing and Sistic.

The talented Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also wrote the score, vividly depicts Alexander Hamilton’s turbulent life in this Broadway musical. From his origins in an orphanage to his historic position as the nation’s first Secretary of the Treasury, Hamilton travelled a long way in his career.

Hamilton has transformed from a regional smash to a true worldwide phenomenon since making its Broadway debut on July 13, 2015. Numerous honours have been given to the play, including the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, 11 Tony Awards, seven Olivier Awards, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Being one of the all-time highest-grossing musical theatre shows is another sign of its wide appeal.

But Singapore isn’t the musical’s first foray outside the US. The Lion City marks the third destination on Hamilton’s maiden international tour, with the show having already wooed audiences in Manila and Abu Dhabi. Notably, the cast gracing Singapore’s stage represents a true blend of international talent.

Among the cast is Australian actor Jason Arrow, who plays the formidable role of Alexander Hamilton. New Zealander Akina Edmonds stars as the enigmatic Angelica Schuyler, while Darnell Abraham, an American actor, steps into the shoes of the stalwart George Washington. Korean-American actor David Park showcases his versatility in dual roles: the charismatic Marquis de Lafayette and the visionary Thomas Jefferson.

Jason Arrow, having portrayed Hamilton in previous performances, shared a deeply personal connection with his character. In a recent chat with the UAE’s Khaleej Times, Arrow remarked, “At the onset, my feelings towards Alexander were ambivalent. But over time, portraying him has taught me assertiveness and the power of dreaming big. It’s like Venom and Spider-Man, distinct yet one.”

Producer Michael Cassel, the driving force behind Hamilton’s international tour, expressed his enthusiasm about the Singapore leg, stating, “Hamilton resonates globally with its themes of hope, equality, and potent storytelling. Watching audiences from Australia to the Philippines embrace its magic has been exhilarating. Singapore, with its rich tapestry of cultures and love for the arts, is the perfect next chapter in Hamilton’s journey.”

For those itching to secure their seats for this theatrical marvel, there’s more good news. A waitlist, giving fans a chance to be at the front of the queue for tickets, opens at 10 a.m. on October 23. So, mark your calendars and get ready for Hamilton’s magic to enthral you! Stay tuned to DEI for more updates.
