October 9, 2023 — The much-anticipated Singaporean film “Wonderland” is set to premiere at the 24th San Diego Asian Film Festival this November. Directed by the talented Chai Yee Wei, known for his works such as “That Girl in Pinafore” and “Mr. Midnight: Beware the Monsters,” the film stars renowned comedians Mark Lee and Peter Yu in the lead roles.
“Wonderland” dives deep into the life of a single father, Loke, played by Mark Lee. Determined to give his daughter Eileen, portrayed by Xenia Tan, a brighter future, Loke sends her off to New York City for further studies. However, behind this act of love is a web of lies and sacrifice. Loke hides the truth about his financial struggles from Eileen, and to afford her overseas education, he moves into a one-room flat to save money.
As Loke transitions to his new living situation, he finds himself surrounded by senior neighbours eager to forge friendships. Tan, played by Peter Yu, is one of them and is known as the “leader” of “The Senior Citizens’ Corner,” a social gathering in their neighbourhood. A bond quickly forms between Loke and Tan, especially when Loke, being illiterate, depends on Tan to read and write letters to Eileen. As they exchange letters, Tan, dealing with his estranged relationship with his own daughter, finds comfort and purpose in assisting Loke.
However, their bond is tested when Tan is met with a tragic revelation concerning Eileen. Torn between telling the truth and protecting his friend from heartbreak, Tan crafts a lie, setting off a series of unforeseen events.
The Asia Pop! section of the San Diego Asian Film Festival is home to this moving story, which Mocha Chai Laboratories and mm2 Entertainment co-produced. Attendees can expect a lineup of other remarkable films, including South Korea’s “Cobweb,” starring the acclaimed Song Kang-ho of “Parasite” fame, and Malaysia’s “Abang Adik.”
For Mark Lee, “Wonderland” is another feather in his cap, showcasing his versatile acting talent. The veteran actor’s prowess in balancing both comedy and drama has been recognised on multiple platforms. Recently, he was nominated for Best Asian Actor at the Septimius Awards in the Netherlands and Best Leading Actor at the 57th Golden Horse Awards. Fans can look forward to more of his outstanding work as he’s set to collaborate with Jack Neo and Henry Thia in 2024’s “Money No Enough 3.”
“Wonderland” is not just a film; it’s a reflection on relationships, sacrifice, and the lengths to which a parent can go for their child’s future. With a captivating narrative and powerful performances, this film promises to be an emotional roller-coaster for its viewers. The world awaits its premiere on November 8 with bated breath.
